We are back in Greece!!
The stunning island of Symi!
After we checked in to Greece on Rhodes we decided to sail further on the day after, since we stayed in Rhodes for weeks in november last year, and the weatherforcast was perfect to sail to Symi.
If you haven`t read our posts from Rhodes, you can find one of them here:
After a nice sail from Rhodes to Symi, we dropped the anchor in Pedi bay.
We were also here in 2018 when we chartered a boat together with other Norwegians. You can read about that trip here: (in norwegian)
https://lailasturblogg.blogspot.com/2018/09/hellasferie-2018-del-2-seiltur.html
The first evening it was not many boats in the bay. We had company of a catamaran and onboard was Liza and Frits from Netherland/Filippines. We met them on the bus after a couple of days here.
When the wind is coming from other directions than easterly, this is a perfect bay to anchor. If the wind comes from west it can be a bit windy over the mountain, but the sea is still calm.
Pedi bay is a small and quiet bay, but there a few restaurants and a small supermarket. It is possible to walk to town, and if you don`t wan`t to climb uphill you can take the bus, which goes almost once pr hour the whole day.
The first day we decided to follow alltrails suggestion for a hike to town:
https://www.alltrails.com/nb-no/explore/trail/greece/symi/symi-pedi
The trail is good marked and easy to find. It starts right from the beach.
We met a lot of animals on our way. Unfortunately they are tied between front foot and hind foot so they cannot run. I guess it is for a reason, but I felt sorry for them.
So many nice flowers. The next day this garden were full of sheeps and empty of flowers….
Passing by a couple of churches.
So nice to walk along this beautiful fields of flowers
***
The trail is changing between paths, gravel roads and concrete roads. You can see the chora (old town) on the top of the hill.
On Symi we found this amazing flower. I think it is the most beautiful flower I have ever seen. It is a Dracunculus Vulgaris and it is one of the most poisoned flowers.
After a while on the trail we came to the street that goes from the old town to Pedi bay.
We went up to the castle but unfortunately it was not easy to find a good spot for photo even if it was up in the hill.
Symi harbour. I think this is the most stunning place we ever been to. So many colours (and I love colours)
Behind the castle
On the old town side.
The south side of Symi harbour.
Old town
From the castle on top of the hill you have an amazing view to old town and down to Pedi bay.
And to Symi harbour.
Has it been windows or doors years ago?
Narrow streets, old buildings and many colours.
And when you put a town up in the hill you need a lot of steps!
Symi harbour is so beautiful.
A bit bigger anchor than ours.
Look at all the amazing colours!!
We walked to the northern part of the harbour.
It looks fake…
Ekklisia Evaggelistria, the Annunciation Church lies on the top of the hill like every other churches here. The gate can be closed but you can go inside as long as you close the gate behind you.
The belltower of the church.
Beautiful flowers.
We decided to have lunch in this bay.
A small restaurant close to the water.
Carnagio Cafe. I suggest you check out the kitchen… (just go to the toilet)
Do you want to go here? It is no airport here, so you have to fly to Rhodes and then take a ferry to Symi.
A lot of sponge for sale!

It was time to walk back to Pedi bay… and walk all the stairs up…
***
Cats are relaxing like everyone else in this town.
Blue is the colour.
There are nice renovated buildings, but you can also see ruins between.
***
On the top of the hill you are passing the windmills. This was the nicest one.
From the windmill there is an amazing view down to the harbour.
And the other side to Pedi.
The windmills on the top of the hill.
Walking down the hill to Pedi. Here we are walking along the road.
A house in Pedi bay.
A video from our first day on Symi:
Pedi bay
Pedi bay with the old town up in the hill in behind. This day it was a bit cloudy and we expected rain so we stayed in the boat most of the time. But we had a short walk to Agios Nikolaos bay, next to Pedi.
A nice walk to this beach. Totally quiet and out of the season.
Nice steps down to the beach.
We brought lunch with us but didn`t stay for a long time because it maybe could come rain.

So after a short lunchstop we walked back.
The view from the trail.
A nice trail, it is not possible to go wrong
A nice place to have a rest.
An old gate. Up hill there is a monastery, we will walk up there and show you in our next post.
Pedi bay

Hmm… nice place to live and have an airbnb…
I will really recommend you to have a stop in Pedi bay, specially if you are here with a sailboat!
A video from Pedi bay:
It was so nice to come back to Symi and have the time to explore more than we did in 2018. And we are not in a hurry so we will definitely explore more of the island in our next posts!
