Avakas Gorge Nature Trail
Avakas Gorge is an amazing masterpiece of nature and it is located at the beginning of Akamas Peninsula.
At the moment there is a lot of construction work along the road so we had to park before White River Beach. With a scooter or ATW you can go all the way to the parking place for the trail, but with a rental car it is not allowed to drive on gravel roads.
The White River Beach is very nice so it is a nice stop anyway.

The Avakas Gorge was created by a raging stream which was flowing over the limestones for thousands of years, creating walls up to 30 meters in height and magnificent rock formations and is 3 km long.
The best time to walk here is in the spring and the autumn. Today was a perfect day.
In the beginning it is a nice trail and it is easy to see where to walk.

After a while you start crossing the river. In the winter it can be too much water in the river.

There were a few groups along the trail, but it was nnot much people to see. I am happy I didn`t had to get in line.
Some places you feel pritty small…
Some places it was hard to walk without being wet, so we took of our shoes and crossed the river without shoes. We also took our bathing shoes, but we didn`t used them. The stones can be very slippery so be careful. I fell just in the beginning of the trail and that made me more nervous rest of the trip.

The stone has been hanging there for decades, but it was a bit scary to walk under!

At the end of the gorge it was some places hard to find the trail, so when we met this couple from Poland we decided to walk the rest of the trail together. You can choose to walk back the same way, but we wanted to walk the loop.
When you finished the gorge you came up to an agricultural area with green fields and animals.
It was now easy to follow the road, we just checked the map on alltrails now and then to be sure.

We had a small lunchbreak before starting down the hill. Nice to meet Ewelina and Maciek!
Because we had to park away from the trail we walked a little bit longer than the loop on alltrails.
The normal length of this trail is about 10 km, but since we had to park away from the startpoint it was 14 km for us.
A video from this amazing hike!
I will really recommend you to try out this trail if you are on Cyprus, specially in spring and autumn. It is amazing! Remember good hiking shoes and enough water!
Now we have just a couple of days left before leaving Cyprus!
